An American chain of addiction clinics has leaked the data of more than 422,000 patients. This includes name, address information, telephone number, date of birth, medical file number, social security number and health insurance information that have come into the hands of attackers, American Addiction Centers said in a letter to affected patients. Treatment information was not taken in the attack, the letter further states.
American Addiction Centers (AAC) has treatment locations in several American states, where it helps people with alcohol and drug addictions. The chain discovered on September 26 that it was the victim of a ‘cybersecurity incident’. AAC does not say exactly what type of incident this is. It is also not reported how the incident could have happened. However, it became clear after an investigation at the beginning of October that patient data had been stolen. They can now have their credit monitored for free for twelve months.
