Northvolt announces completion of development of its first recycled battery. To produce the design at scale, the organization is scaling up a factory in Sweden.
The battery consists entirely of raw materials that can be recovered by recycling battery waste: cobalt, nickel and manganese. A technological breakthrough, according to the organization.
“This is a more sustainable, better way to extract raw materials for battery production than mining,” said Emma Nehrenheim, Chief Environmental Officer at Northvolt. “We make it clear that the circle of batteries can be closed.”
Directly to the practice
Northvolt is setting up a giant recycling plant to mass-produce the design. The recycling plant will be built next to an existing Northvolt plant in Skellefteå, Sweden.
Ultimately, the complex processes two types of battery waste: spent batteries from electric vehicles and residual waste from existing factories. Northvolt will recycle 125,000 tons of old batteries annually to produce 60 gigawatt hours of new batteries. By 2030, the organization hopes to have a 20 to 25 percent share of the European battery production market.
