Tesla delivered a total of 936,172 cars in 2021. Of these, 911,208 were Model 3 or Y, and 24,964 were Model S or X. Of all delivered cars, 4151 were registered in the Netherlands. That is more than half less than in 2020, when 8,957 Teslas were registered.
Tesla delivered only one more car in the Netherlands in all of 2021 than it did in December 2020 alone, according to sales statistics from Bovag. At that time, 4150 cars were delivered. In December 2021, 1,882 Teslas were registered in the Netherlands. Only six of the new Dutch Teslas in 2021 were a Model S or X.
According to Bovag, the high December sales are due to the changing tax rules for electric cars that came into effect from 2022. From 1 January, the addition for the private use of passenger cars by business users has been increased from 12 to 16 percent, making it more financially attractive to purchase another car in 2021. Bovag attributes the lower total sales in the Netherlands to chip shortages, which meant that cars were less readily available throughout 2021.
Despite the fact that Tesla did less in the Netherlands than in 2020, worldwide sales have improved considerably. Deliveries have almost doubled from 2020 when the company delivered 499,550 cars. Tesla has not disclosed a reason for the higher sales. According to the company, a car does not count as ‘delivered’ until the vehicle has been handed over to the customer.
