Mozilla wants to integrate its own VPN solution more closely within Firefox in the coming years. In addition, a separate VPN extension will be available at addons.mozilla.org. The Firefox developer made this known during a recent Ask Me Anything on Mozilla Connect. Mozilla has been offering its own VPN solution for some time to generate extra income. The VPN service, which requires a paid subscription, was developed by Mozilla itself and uses servers from VPN provider Mullvad.
The recent annual report for 2023 shows that Mozilla earned less from ‘subscriptions and advertisements’ last year than the year before. This amounted to approximately $76 million in 2022 compared to $65 million in 2023. The share of VPN subscriptions is not stated separately. Agreements with search engine providers, especially Google, amounted to $495 million in 2023 (pdf). Mozilla says it will come up with new ‘privacy features’ for next year, but no details have been given, which also applies to the announced integration with its own VPN solution.
